Swipe card success sees rise in free school meals

"“Our whole dining experience has improved - students spend less time queuing and spend more time eating together." - David Dickson, headteacher, Eastbury Comprehensive School

THE number of pupils having free school meals has risen at one Barking school following the launch of a new scheme. Eastbury School, in Hulse Avenue, Barking, is the first in the borough to trial the new Street Base Connect Card.
Since its launch in March, there has been an 11 per cent rise in the number of pupils accessing free school meals at the school. Street Base Connect gives young people Oyster-style swipe card access to youth, health, leisure and library services along with cashless catering.

The council said it believes the increase is down to the fact that the card removes the stigma of free school meals as every pupil has the card. David Dickson, headteacher at Eastbury Comprehensive School, was delighted with the success of the card.
He said: “I would like to thank our students who have contributed to its smooth introduction, parents and all the staff at the school and borough who are ensuring success. “Our whole dining experience has improved - students spend less time queuing and spend more time eating together. “It has improved working conditions for catering staff and they now have more time to provide advice about healthy options to students.”

The card is currently being piloted at Eastbury School and will roll out to other schools later this year.

"Nationwide Retail Systems came out as a clear winner." - Steve Jones, Senior Support Officer

Tender for this contract was advertised through the European Journal (OJEU) and a full procurement procedure was completed. We originally asked for expressions of interest from suppliers to which we had plenty of response and issued Pre Qualification Questionnaire's to each supplier.

We then received 14 completed PQQ's and evaluated these to produce a 'shortlist' of 5 suppliers to invite to tender.
The ITT's where distributed with a return date of 23rd December 2009. A full and detailed evaluation of these was then completed using a Quality / Price ratio of 70% / 30% for which Nationwide Retail Systems came out as a clear winner. It is my opinion that the area's which stood out in the NRS bid were the attention to detail, the importance placed on support and maintenance of the product and also the development of a Centralised system to enable Wrexham CBC to monitor the various sites operating this package from a central office. These facts along with the very competitive pricing, not only of the initial purchase costs but also of annual maintenance and support, ensured that NRS were awarded the Framework Agreement to supply WCBC schools catering section with Cashless dining solutions for the next 3 to 4 years.

eMoney News - Cashless catering 'seamless and simple'

squid_neworangelogo

Cashless catering systems in school canteens could prove to be a seamless and simple way for pupils to pay for their meals, it has been suggested. The recent integration of ePayments provider sQuid with Nationwide Retail System's (NRS) Trust-e Cashless Catering School Management Solution will allow parents to load cash onto a contactless smart card online, which will give students the chance to purchase food and drink while at school.

Additionally, as they can top up and view the transactions online, parents will be able to keep track of what their child is eating. Speaking about the recent integration of the two systems, David Paylor, Head of Cashless Systems at the NRS, says: "It will provide a simple and safe way for students to pay for their meals, as well as greatly reducing administration in the school."

Furthermore, the move will totally eliminate the need for cash in the canteens of schools that choose to incorporate this technology.

Tess Walker, Headteacher of the Ormiston Park Academy in Thurrock, Essex, also recently advised that since the school adopted cashless catering systems, queues in the canteen have been greatly reduced.

First reward card for young people to launch in Barking and Dagenham

Barking and Dagenham Council and NHS Barking and Dagenham are to launch the UK's first integrated youth reward card designed specifically to encourage young people to lead healthier, more active lives.

The ground breaking integrated card will give young people Oyster-card-style swipe card access to youth, health, leisure and library services and for the first time ever, a cashless catering system ( trust-e from Nationwide Retail Systems ), will be introduced into schools across the borough.

The pioneering scheme will draw all services together on one card and will encourage young people to increase participation in positive activities within their communities and lead healthier lives through a rewards scheme.

By taking positive actions like choosing healthier meals in their school lunch, taking part in sporting activities or volunteering for charities, card holders will earn rewards points to redeem on a range of exciting activities aimed at young people.

Consultation is currently being carried out with young people to get their views on incentives. Rewards could include access to leisure facilities and classes, concert, cinema and theatre tickets, iTunes vouchers and residential adventure weekends along with other age related activities that young people will love.

Partnership with IOT plc

Nationwide Retail Systems ltd is excited to announce their latest partnership with IOT plc.

IOT are the industry leader in providing Print and Copy control solutions into education and business environments.

Nationwide Retail Systems ltd has developed an integrated biometric solution with IOT plc for their Follow-You print solution. This allows our trust-e biometric cashless catering solution to also provide biometric access control to IOT’s Multi Function Printers - biometric printer access.

IOT’s Follow-You print solution can help relieve print bottlenecks. When a document is sent to print, it sits in a virtual queue where it is held until the sender authenticates themselves at a print device.
A secure release system, it allows users to collect print from any print device on the network, at a time that is convenient to them. Students can, for example, collect prints at break rather than milling around a printer in lesson time.

Communication matters. Smartly presented print communication has impact. Letters, course material, newsletters and notices look professional and are more likely to be read. IOT Plc’s digital multi functional printers treat each and every document as an original; delivering laser sharp quality, print after print and copy after copy. With the ability to feed special papers, and staple, punch and fold documents, your communication and learning material will be of the highest quality.
